"Fancy" Hang-Out Idea
Jul. 30th, 2022 12:59 pmI was thinking about how I love dressing up and going to the ballet or to parties with friends but I hate being stuck staying still in a chair for hours or interacting with people I don't know, and how I want more social time with my friends but we're all adults with busy schedules and organizing a get together is an exercise in frustration, so when we do it's a haphazard "movie night" mostly involving watching random clips from youtube and ordering cheap pizza that barely deserves the name.
So I've been thinking about floating the idea of monthly organized "Fancy" get-togethers, that would be like a once-a-month thing on the same day every month (like the first Saturday every month - harder to forget that way) so people could plan ahead and if they need to miss one here or there it's no big deal because it's every month, where we all dress up a bit and go to one of our homes (I'd like it if we rotated, but seeing as how even getting this off the ground would be a struggle, it would probably just be mine for months or even years) and have, not a party, but something like an Art Night or Culture Night.
Meaning each of us, during the intervening time, prepares something to bring and share, be it food, a drawing or painting (physical or digital - doesn't matter!) or a story or review or article or video or piece of music, and each get a turn to talk about our thing and show off a little, basically. The point would be to spend time with each other, learn more about each other's interests*, have fun, and feel fancy doing it. As someone who's been un- or under-employed my entire working life and likes sparkly things but can't afford shit, that last point does matter, as does the in-person aspect of this. I have extremely severe untreated ADHD, if I go without seeing a person long enough they may as well cease to exist (that said, my friendship dynamics don't degenerate, so it's like if that person was continually erased and restored to the timeline).
I would like that a lot. Maybe one day I'll get it to happen. But if anyone on here ever reads this and thinks it sounds fun to do with your own group of friends, please do! I hope you have fun and get to feel fancy with your friends for a while too.
*In a way that actually sticks. Things you read online, even stuff from close friends, tend to be ephemeral in your memory. Humans need the tactile aspect to really reinforce our perceived reality - and it ain't just people with ADHD.
